Overview

How the Competitive Affordable Housing Program Works

The Competitive Affordable Housing Program (AHP) is one of the nation’s largest sources of grants for affordable housing projects. Since AHP began in 1990, FHLB Des Moines has awarded $835 million to projects providing affordable housing to more than 95,500 families and individuals.

AHP recipients are selected through a scoring process after submitting an application containing all required documentation and meeting the feasibility guidelines. Specific and complete information can be found in the AHP Implementation Plan.

2025 Program Information
  • Maximum AHP awards are $3,000,000 per project with a maximum of $150,000 subsidy per unit.

Key dates for the funding round are:

  1. Evaluate your Project for an AHP Award: January 2025 - March 31, 2025
  2. Complete Application: April 1 - May 1, 2025 at 4:30 PM CDT
  3. Notification of Award: December 2025
