The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des
Moines Capital Community Awards
reflects the vibrancy and creativity
of a few of the many remarkable
rural communities in the Bank’s
five-state district, including:
Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North
Dakota and South Dakota. Capital
Communities are those communities
where people step up as leaders,
take innovative ideas, work together
and accomplish great things. Through
vision, planning and teamwork, these
communities have met the challenge
of sustaining or revitalizing their
local economies.

Conversations with Successful Communities
FHLB Des Moines introduced the
Capital Community Award in
2004 to recognize a few of the
many innovative rural
communities in our District.
To commemorate the fifth year
for the award, FHLB Des Moines
revisited two of our original
Capital Communities: Charles
City and Manning, Iowa. We
invited local leaders, Bank
members and residents from
each community to participate
in a one-day workshop,
“Conversations with Successful
Communities,” held in their
town.
During each workshop,
participants were given the
opportunity to reflect on
their community which resulted
in thoughtful discussions and
new ideas. FHLB Des Moines
felt the information gathered
at these meetings would be of
interest and applicable to
other communities throughout
our District. So, we published
“Conversations with Successful
Communities” –
Charles City
and
Manning. For more
information or for hard copies
of the booklets, please

Angie Richards.
