Tellers to Technology

Members attending the FHLB Des Moines Fall Conference: Tellers to Technology, held at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown in October, were exposed to a variety of speakers and panels of experts. Throughout the two-day conference, speakers addressed topics ranging from finance and rural economic development to social media.

Daniel Pink, futurist and author of “A Whole New Mind,” keynoted the opening luncheon while Stuart Varney, financial and economic journalist and FOX TV host, wrapped up the second day. Following his remarks, Mr. Varney moderated a Leaders in Banking panel.  Panelists included:

  Greg Bynum

President and COO, First Community Bank, Lee’s Summit, MO

Stan K. Dardis   CEO, Bremer Banks, St. Paul, MN
Dean A. DeVos   Senior Vice President, First Bank & Trust, Sioux Falls, SD
Steve Stenehjem   President and CEO, Watford City Bancshares, Watford City, ND
Alan R. Tubbs   President and CEO, Ohnward Bancshares, Maquoketa, IA

Also included in the conference highlights was recognition of the Bank’s 2007 Capital Communities. For the fourth year, FHLB Des Moines honored a few of the many remarkable rural communities in our District with our Capital Community Award. Communities with less than 10,000 in population are chosen for the award based on growth and development efforts, outcomes and involvement by a FHLB Des Moines member. The 2007 Capital Communities include: Decorah, Iowa; Mahnomen, Minnesota; Brookfield, Missouri; Ashley, North Dakota; and Platte, South Dakota.

Each Capital Community received an award and $15,000 check. The communities were also invited to display their accomplishments at the 75th Anniversary Celebration held at the Bank’s new location on the first night of the conference. While enjoying food and live music, members had the opportunity to explore the office space occupied by FHLB Des Moines and also meet Capital Community representatives.
